How to stay sane during quarantine (5 tips to keep you calm, productive and happy)

So if you’re like me, right now you’re locked down again due to the covid-19 situation. 

Now whilst there may be the odd advantage to this situation (namely fewer visits to and from the in-laws), for most of us, being confined is not good news.

So in this blog post I’m going to share with you five things that you should do to ensure that you not only avoid going insane, but also remain calm, productive and happy during this unfortunate but necessary inconvenience. 

So let´s jump straight in with tip number one shall we?

So, if you’re part of a family or you live with someone else, its really important that you spend at least a little bit of time alone every day.

Whether it’s finding a quiet space in which to meditate, or just being alone to read a book or listen to some music, enjoying a bit of time by yourself is essential.

Having a bit of “me time” without the other people you live with is a vital part of self-care and whilst it may seem almost impossible to achieve in a crowded household during lockdown, it’s imperative that you get it.

Especially if you’re someone who naturally and habitually needs their own space. So don’t be afraid to ask for it. You may need to reassure your partner that they’re not doing your head in, but the truth is we should all be getting a little bit of regular alone time. Especially if you feel like you really need it. 

On the flip-side of this is tip number two, for those of you who are on your own at this time. And that is to try to be as sociable as possible, whilst respecting social distancing rules of course.

Whether it´s a quiz or a group chat on Zoom with your mates, or a video call to your mum and dad, keeping in touch and talking to people is really important at this time, especially if you live alone.

Now this might seem glaringly obvious, but take note here the friends and loved ones of those who are rattling around their houses on their own.

Let´s remember to check up on our single friends and relatives from time to time and make sure we don´t end up with the Bridget Jones type scenario where you’re single friend is found eaten by Alsatians. 

Tip number three is to take extra care with your diet.

Being confined means you’re probably likely to be moving a lot less than usual, in which case it might be an idea to eat a bit less than normal.

Unless of course, you’re looking forward to the challenge of having to lose some weight once all of this is over. 

Eating more natural, nutrient dense foods will help to keep you fuller for longer. And so less likely to snack on less healthy options.

Trying to follow the rainbow diet of multi-coloured fruits and vegetables will ensure that you keep your guts´ good bacteria well-nourished.

This is something which is being increasingly linked to a healthy immune system and a healthy psychological state, as 95% of serotonin is produced in the guts. 

In other words healthy and happy guts equals a healthy and happy you! 

Straight talk alert – Now let´s be honest, you’re probably also going to have more time on the sofa watching TV. So therefore be careful with the snacks you buy.

Simply put, if you haven’t got them you can’t eat them and there are plenty of healthy alternatives that you could make yourself.

Tip Number four.  The importance of exercise during lockdown cannot and should not be underestimated.

Firstly if you’re allowed to go out to exercise then it’s the perfect excuse to get outside, enjoy some fresh air, maybe go to your local park or beach and break up the monotony of being at home all the time. 

And if you’re lucky enough to see a bit of sunshine whilst you´re out then your body will get a boost in producing vitamin D as well.

This is thought to be even more important during times like these as vitamin D deficiency is known to increase susceptibility to infection.

And even if it’s a grey day weather wise, your body’s still going to get all the usual benefits that physical exercise brings, not forgetting those all-important feel-good hormones called endorphins that will keep you feeling calm, relaxed and stress free. 

Finally we come to tip number 5 and that´s to stay positive and try to see the bright side of the situation.

Now I know it´s no fun not being able to do all the things you love, but how many of us, under normal circumstances, complain about not having enough time to do the things you want to. (raise hand) I know I do. 

Well now you DO have time, so try your best to make the most of it and not waste it on Netflix.

Spend some time on your hobby, do all of those little jobs you´ve been meaning to do around the house. Actually get on with the blog you´ve always wanted to start.
